The Big Drove

In this day and age of motorised transport it is comparatively rare to find large musters of sheep still being driven through the country. Encountered recently was this flock of sheep being driven down from Waipaoa Station for forwarding out of the district by rail. The mob of 6,000 was being shifted in stages of four thousand and two thousand and "Photo News" met them along the Bushmere Road.

One of the shepherds, Ted McHugh, has a word with Bruce Proffit, who keeps track of any sheep which for one reason or another come to grief along the way.

Another of the drovers looking after the flock was Jack Miller who is pictured with his horses and dogs.
