University Display

Keen interest was taken in the University of Waikato display staged recently in the library, particularly by many high school students as the university is now the nearest one to Gisborne. At the moment Waikato has only a nucleus of buildings constructed, but the eventual campus of 130 acres will include all the required buildings and halls of residence. A model of the completed campus is pictured below.

Gisborne girl, Claire Finnigan, who is now at the University, was on hand to answer questions. Here she is shown with a model on which is displayed the university's robe which is worn by those on whom an honorary doctorate is conferred. The robe is dazzling. It has a crimson gown, gold hood and black Tudor cap.

The display included some of the Maori artifacts on permanent loan to the University from Sir Bernard Fergusson. This is part of a box decorated with some of the best Maori carving ever seen.
