Then and Now

These two views of Gisborne show the difference between the years 1887 (above) and 1968 (below). The top picture, which was taken by the photographer of the day, Fred Crawford, shows the beginnings of a prosperous and thriving city, while the picture below shows that the area has reached that stage. Fox Street, from above which both photos were taken, can be seen in the foreground, while the Kingsley sub-division covers the area to the lower left. Numerous trees have grown and now hide the view of most of the Waimata River. The city area of course has advanced beyond recognition.
