The Gisborne Photo News

Then And Now

Gisborne's new overseas wharf and outer swinging basin are now virtually completed and are awaiting the arrival of the first overseas vessel.

An interesting comparison with the modern-day scene below is this view of the harbour in its early days of development when the then Turanganui River mouth (before it was diverted to Waikanae Beach) was flanked by two breakwaters which offered protection and safe passage to vessels making their way upstream to the old wharves at Read's Quay.

This picture was probably taken about 1920 prior to the extensive harbour development which resulted in the diversion of the river and the excavation of the Kaiti Basin.
