Highlight of the 1957 golfing season for Gisborne players was the visit to the P.B. course of Australian world-class professional, Peter Thompson. He played an exhibition round with British pro David Thomas and locals Eddie Fennell and Len Roderick.

The Chief Justice of N.Z., Sir Harold Barrowclough, K.C. M.G., C.B., D.S.O., M.C., E.D., dedicated and officially opened the new Gisborne War Memorial Hall.

October 1957 saw a big step forward in the care and education of Gisborne Intellectually handicapped children when the new I.H.C. Kahutia School was officially opened.

The Gisborne Operatic Society's 70th anniversary year production of New Moon took the stage in the Opera House five years ago. In the leading roles were Peter Keiha and Jenny Fromow, both of whom have now left the district. Mr Keiha took a leading role in the national production of Porgy and Bess, and Miss Fromow (now Mrs Dick Glover) is in Auckland furthering her voice training.

The 1962 N.Z. Boxing championships were a big draw for local fight fans when they were staged in the Y.M.C.A. Stadium. Most successful of the local fighters was light welterweight Paul Lister, who beat M. Santos in the final to win the title.
