Charlie Fletcher

Life Member

Twenty years administrative service to the Gisborne Park Golf Club was recognised earlier this year when Mr Charlie Fletcher, retiring president after three years, was elected a life member.

Charlie's interest in golf started at an early age, when, as a boy of 12, he spent his leisure hours caddying around the P.B. links.

A foundation member of the now defunct Turanganui Club, he returned from the war in 1945 and joined the Park Club, then a virtually treeless race course. As a committee member from 1947, he was active in the development of the club to its present standard and recalls being a member of working bees which rebuilt the clubhouse and planted the hundreds of pine trees the course is now well known for.

Prior to his term as president he was club captain for five years, and today is a vice-president, He has served on the Gisborne District Golf Association since its formation and has been a Freyberg selector on three occasions.

As a golfer he reached a three handicap at the peak of his form and represented the district several times.

Residing at 12 Kowhai Street, Charlie is a director of Gisborne Specialties Ltd.
