The combined efforts of 19 bulldozers, working almost continuously for four weeks, completed the mammoth task of clearing the 16 acre Waikokopu slip, which carried away 13 chains of the Gisborne-Wairoa railway line, and buried the Nuhaka-Mahia road in August, 1957. The panoramic view shows the enormous shelf cut by the 'dozers in their efforts to reopen the line.

The culmination of years of endeavour was reached ten years ago by the Gisborne R.S.A. when its new building was officially opened. An ambitious project, the hall and clubrooms were, and still are, a great asset to the community.

John Thornett's 1962 Wallabies opened their New Zealand tour in fine style at Rugby Park when they defeated P.B. by 31 points to six, before a crowd of 9000. Thornett and P.B. captain Alan Rowlands are pictured leading their teams on to the field.

The first major step in the up-grading of Gisborne airport was achieved in September, 1962, when the then Minister of Aviation, Mr J. K. McAlpine, officially opened the new terminal building. The occasion was marked by an air pageant, highlighted by a display by the Air Force Harvard aerobatics team.
