Sportsman Of The Month

Buster Taylor

Ngatapa captain and flanker Buster Taylor reached a personal milestone in his rugby playing career last month when he played his 50th consecutive first class game.

Unlike most successful rugby players, he did not get a grounding in the game at school.

Until his fourth year at the Boys' High, Buster was a soccer player, and at this sport had his first taste of representative play as a consistent member of P.B. junior teams. While a senior at the school he made the change to rugby, and immediately won a berth in the first XV. That was in 1958.

In 1962, in his first season of senior rugby, he was selected for the P.B. team to play East Coast, and has not missed a representative game since (either for the Bay or the Combined team).

26 years of age, 5ft 11in in height, and weighing 190lb, Buster is the son of Mrs V. Taylor, 345 Childers Road, and the late Mr W. H. Taylor. A farmer by profession, he runs sheep and cattle on his 400 acre Taumata Station, at Rere. He recently announced his engagement to Miss Janet May Stewart, Auckland, daughter of Mrs E. J. Stewart, Gisborne, and the late Mr Stewart.
