A Meeting House History

The fully carved meeting house, Ruakapanga, on the Hauiti marae at Tolaga Bay, was the scene of a large gathering when the Maori people of the district came together to hear the legends of their ancestors and the story and explanations of the carvings and paintings of the building.

The talks were given by Mr Pine Taiapa, of Tikitiki, who was one of the carvers of the panels when the building was erected in 1943.

Containing some of the best in rich carving, Ruakapanga is one of the foremost meeting houses of its kind on the East Coast.
