Table Tennis Championships

The Poverty Bay Table Tennis Championships were held in the Y.M.C.A. stadium on Saturday, June 17, with players competing from Northland through to the Hutt Valley and Wellington.

Starting on an exciting note the final of the open men's singles between Peter Salmon, the Bay of Plenty's top seeded player, and Andre Vermes, Poverty Bay's title holder, provided plenty of suspense, even though the final result was a victory for Vermes with a game score of 21-13, 21-12, 21-15, 21-14.

Vermes conceded the first game to the visitor while sizing up Salmon's forceful loop drive.

However, he took control in the second game and the two players provided a great exhibition of table tennis at its best.
