Road Safety Parade

A parade of spectacularly smashed vehicles, interspersed with floats bearing cryptic messages, was soberly and thoughtfully witnessed by a large crowd, as it moved down Gladstone Road on a recent Friday night.

Organised by the Gisborne Road Safety Committee as part of a national campaign to reduce the ever-growing number of accidents in New Zealand (which incldently reached an all-time record figure of 560 fatalities in 1965), the parade was designed to shock its viewers into an awareness of the dangers of careless motoring.
