Underground Exploration

Three members of the Wairoa Caving Group, Arthur Norgrove and Roy Port, both of Gisborne, and Les McIlroy, of Wairoa, recently made one of several exploratory trips through the Mangaone Valley Caves, south-west of Morere.

The caves, which consist of a main passage, about a mile long, and several side passages, contain a magnificent display of glow-worms, stalagmites and stalactites. A stream runs along the bottom.

The main entrance to the cave is obstructed by an 80ft sheer drop, but a side passage gives easier access, although it at times becomes extremely tight.

These dramatic pictures were taken by Arthur, who is president of the group, during the trip.
