Eleven members of the 1st Battalion, R.N.Z.A., recently spent their last weekend on leave in Gisborne before departing for two years' service in Malaya. They are, from left, standing: S. Grace, B. Tautau, R. Waugh, B. Kingi, H. Bridge, and W. Taare. Kneeling: R. Matehe, C. Connor, B. Ruru, B. Waihua, and C. Rickard. Henry Bridge, son of Mrs T. J. Bridge, Bushmere Road, Matawhero, who stands 6ft 8¾in high, is reputed to be the tallest man ever in the N.Z. Army.

Lower Hutt shepherd, Wayne de Ridder, 20, spent three days in Gisborne recently as part of his planned nine months' walking trip around the coast of the North Island. Carrying a pack of up to 80lbs, Wayne covers 15 miles a day, and had been on the road six weeks when he arrived in town with a broken pack frame. He is pictured (right) with Mr Harry Jamieson, manager of Gisborne Leatheries, with the repaired frame.
