New Sewer Outfall Pipe In Use

The City Council's New submarine sewerage outfall pipeline, which extends 6000 feet out into Poverty Bay, came into use last month with the switching over of several of the city's area interceptor lines.

On the land end of the outfall pipeline, adjacent to Stanley Road near the beach, is an intricate processing and channelling installation which feeds the sewerage into the pipe.

This replaces the old septic tank which for some time has been an unpleasant asset of the city near the beach.

The Stanley Road works which channel the sewage (from right of picture) through two comminuters (centre) into a flooding tank (left) and out to sea via the outfall pipeline. In the background is the partially-constructed pumping station which will cut in automatically during peak flow periods or extremely high tides.

The city engineer, Mr H. Williams, who devised the scheme, and the Mayor, Mr H. H. Barker, watch one of the comminuters being installed.

The flooded septic tank nearby will now be drained and demolished
