Harbour Development Scheme
Work has now commenced on the first major step of the Gisborne Harbour Board's £860,000 development scheme, which involves the dredging out of the shallow triangular area (marked by border) by the Westminster Dredging Company, of Australia. When completed, this area will be a turning basin for overseas shipping, which will berth at wharves to be constructed at the landward end of the concrete breakwater (arrow). The inner harbour basin, which is capable of handling only coastal vessels, can be seen at centre right of the picture.
