Show Jumping

The New Zealand Horse Society's Gisborne area show jumping championships were held at the Showgrounds recently.

Torrential rain fell for the first two days of the show, but on the third, when the inter-provincial teams event for the Rutherford Cup was being staged, the storm clouds parted and bright sunshine prevailed.

The Auckland team won the trophy with eight jumping faults, with Wellington second, and Gisborne A third.

Perhaps the most exciting jump of the day was the Puissance, when Ribbon, ridden by Miss Felicity Williams, Masterton, reached 6ft 4in to win the event from Stuart Mitchell, of Gisborne, on Walnut.

At the end of the show, Walnut was lying second in points for the W.D. and H. O. Wills £150 trophy, with four of the nine area shows completed.
