Large crowds lined the sandhills at Wainui Beach recently to see the luxury passenger liner s.s. Northern Star pass along the coast less than two miles off shore. A sister ship to the Southern Cross, the vessel is a member of the Shaw Savill fleet. En route from Wellington to Auckland, she was greeted by several Gisborne fishing boats out at sea.

The Hene Materoa Children's Home was presented with a large refrigerator valued at £135 by Tip Top Ice-Cream. £112 of the total amount was raised by the Icecream Company at its stall at the Jaycee Industries Fair, and it was decided to present this profit to some charitable institution, to be decided by Jaycee. The children's home was selected, and the company donated the additional cash to purchase the refrigerator. Pictured with the fridge are, from lefts: Mr Tom Sawyer, Gisborne branch manager Tip Top, Mrs B. Girling-Butcher, chairwoman Children's Home Committee, and Mr Tim Gambrill, president-elect Gisborne Jaycee.
