Young Nick's Head
Historic Young Nick's Head, pictured from across Poverty Bay at Waikanae Beach, glowing in the sunlight under a heavy dark sky. When sunlit, the towering white cliffs are a prominent landmark from the sea, and are believed tb be the first New Zealand land sighted on Captain James Cook's discovery voyage in the Endeavour in 1769. The head derived its name from Nicholas Young, the lookout boy on the Endeavour, whose sighting of the now famous cliffs put New Zealand on the map almost 200 years ago.
