Cycling Record Shattered

Former Gisborne cyclist Neil Robinson, who is now riding with considerable success in Auckland, returned to his home town recently to compete in the annual race from Gisborne to Te Karaka and return.

Riding off the scratch mark with Alf Baker, of Wairoa, Robinson set a sizzling pace, to catch the rest of the field and cross the finish line by a comfortable margin.

His time for the race was 1hr 22min 27sec, chopping exactly 10 minutes off the existing record. Four other riders also bettered the old time.

Following Robinson across the line were Alf Baker (2nd), Burnie Ballantyne (3rd), Kevin Whitely (4th), and Dave Spellers (5th).
