Fire Destroys Tile Factory

Fire completely gutted the tile factory of G. Duckworth, in upper Gladstone Road, when it swept through the building after a heater exploded in a tile-drying room.

Although the Gisborne Fire Brigade raced to the scene, they were unable to save the building from severe damage, as the roof had fallen in, and the woodwork was well alight.

Using three engines and heavy delivery hoses, the brigade brought the blaze under control in ten minutes, and had extinguished the flames in a further 20 minutes.
