Injured Japanese Seaman Landed

An injured 18-year-old Japanese fisherman was rushed to Cook Hospital when he was landed from the 263-ton tuna vessel Honode Maru No.38 at the Gisborne wharf on a recent Saturday evening.

Struck on the head by a steel block which had fallen 15ft from the rigging, the man was suffering from concussion and head injuries.

The accident occurred while the vessel was fishing about 100 miles off Cape Turnagain.

It made the 200-mile dash to Gisborne in 12 hours, and remained in port for several days until the man was able to rejoin his ship.
