The Call of the Surf

Surf board riding, which has exploded into popularity throughout the world in the last decade, is probably the fastest-growing sport to hit Gisborne in many years.

Ideally situated with many beaches at its doorstep, and with its moderate climate, Gisborne is considered among the best surf centres in N.Z.

Within six miles of the city, many different types of surf are to be found, from the smaller regular waves at Waikanae, to larger well-shaped ones at Wainui, and the big point surf off the Makarori headland.

Among Gisborne's surf followers are a group of experienced Australian riders, who have taken up residence here, considering the waves to be the best in the country.
