Before and After

These two pictures, taken by Bob Hepburn from the same spot just north of Otoko, show the remarkable transformation wrought by the Ministry of Works in converting part of the old Gisborne-Moutuhora railway line into a modern highway. The top picture shows a "down" goods train near the 32-mile peg, not far from the old one-way overhead bridge north of Otoko. The two "Ab" locomotives have worked a heavy train of superphosphate on the "up" run for hill country topdressing. Returning, they are hauling several wagons of coarsa metal for stock-piling at Otoko for use on the new road formation. The picture below was taken four and a half years later, and shows the highway which has replaced the old railway line.
