The Poverty Bay Stampede

The first Poverty Bay Stampede, which ran for three days during the Christmas-New Year festive season, proved to be an outstanding success with the large crowds of local and visiting people who attended its comprehensive programme of beach races, parade, rodeo, and carnival day.

Organised by Greater Gisborne (Inc), in conjunction with the Poverty Bay Polo Club, the Poverty Bay and East Coast Rodeo Association, and the Gisborne branch of the New Zealand Horse Society, the stampede was plagued in its early stages by adverse weather conditions. Fortunately, these did not continue, and the rodeo and carnival days enjoyed brilliant sunshine.

For many of the spectators, the rodeo was the highlight of the event, where an exciting day's entertainment was had by all, as the colourfully dressed "cowboys" pitted their skill against the snorting, bucking, untamed fury of their ferocious mounts.

The stampede is to become an annual event, and next year, in addition to the programme staged this time, will feature the National rodeo championships and the regional finals of the New Zealand Golden Fleeco shearing competitions.
