Regatta at Wairoa

A perfect day, one of the finest stretches of rowing water in the country, and a varied and interesting programme, arranged and carried through almost without a hitch, combined to make the first New Zealand Rowing Championships ever to be held at Wairoa a memorable occasion in the minds and memories of all who attended.

The thousands who attended all had an unexcelled view of the course. Photos on this page show crowds on the banks as Whakatane leads the field in the champion double sculls.

A table of magnificent trophies was the centre of attention near the finishing line.

Champion of them all: D. D. Rowlands (West End, Auckland), who won the champion singles for the third year in succession, taking his boat from the water after the race.

For the fourth year, West End also took the eights championship by a good margin. In our photograph, West End have passed out of camera range, and their wake is trailed by Arahoma and Mercer, with Poverty Bay over by the commentator's launch.
