This early view of Gisborne from Mr Ledger's collection was probably located in the lower Read's Quay area. We could not match it with a present-day photograph because we could not find a landmark to give us the bearing of the original.

The Loch Nagar, which dragged her anchors and ran aground on Waikanae Beach opposite the present paddling pool. The 400-ton barque was aground for six months, according to Mr Ledger's sources, before she was refloated. She was a frequent visitor after this incident, which took place in 1880, and often carried away the district wool clip.
