Builders are Busy

The rapid progress of Gisborne to the status of a city and a busy commercial centre is reflected in the expenditure of hundreds of thousands of pounds on construction and building work in the town and district.

Noar enough to a cool million pounds is going out for the Waipaoa River control scheme and its related bridging and roading works, while comfortable fortunes are being spent on the new High School, the harbour, the hospital, the borough water supply, and similar projects.

A further stage in the hospital rebuilding programme has started with additions to the nurses' home.

Expansion of electric power reticulation, especially to the north, is reflected in this new distribution station in Massey Road. In the background is the suburb of Mangapapa.

Almost complete remodelling of the Bank of New Zealand premises in due to start shortly.

Work is almost completed on the remodelling of these business premises at the corner of Gladstone Road and Low Street, said to be Gisborne's oldest shop premises.

The Cosmopolitan Club premises in Peel Street are to be remodelled and extended.

The new clubhouse of the Waikanae Surf and Life-Saving Club takes shape near the new beach pavilion on the foreshore.
The nev building, to cost £1800, will have an area of 1400 square feet and will house 50 club members and includes a kitchen, conveniences, dressing-rooms, and club rooms. Club has £1000 in hand and needs another £800 for the project.
