Beach Pavilion Handed Over

On the day of the official opening of the magnificent new beach pavilion fronting Waikanae Beach, one of Gisborne's "passing showers" happened to be passing at the wrong time. Between a beautiful morning and a sunny late-afternoon, a storm blew off the land, moved over Gisborne, and disappeared out to sea. And so it was that the culminating moment in the life of the Waikanae Beach Society, and the end of its work for the benefit of the sea-bathing public, was staged in a drizzle of rain, with only a handful of the public present.

So our photographs cannot but present the pavilion in other than a temporarily dimmed light, and an adequate coverage in pictures must wait for a more appropriate occasion.

Mr A. J. Nicol, the long-time president and moving spirit of the Beach Society, is seen addressing those present from the balcony before handing over the keys to the Mayor, Mr H. H. Barker (left). Mr Barker accepted the keys on behalf of the Borough Council, which is taking over all the assets of the society, estimated to be worth £40,000.
