Girls at the Oars
Perhaps in Russia, rowing is a sport at which women excel, but in Gisborne the sight of pretty lassies hearing on the oars is confined to an occasional Sunday outing in the rowboat.
They are seen as their boat swept across the finishing line — an easy winner.
Except on a recent Saturday afternoon, that is. The occasion was a programme of events on the river in which local rowers tested their mettle against visitors from Wairoa. Included was a local contest for the girls, which was won by the team at left, Hisses Rae Gardner, Yvonne Emms, Diana Overy, and Helen O'Kane.
