Mr R. A. Keeling, with his wife and two sons, Rex, aged 11 years, and Julian, aged 5 years. In the general election held on November 13, Mr Keeling was returned for the Gisborne electorate on the preliminary count by 641 votes. Figures were: Keeling, R. A. (Labour), 6564; Dudfield, H.(Nat.), 5923; D'Anvers, E. (Soc.Credit), 803. Mr Keeling represented Gisborne in Parliament from 1949 until the snap election in 1951, when he conceded the seat to Mr Dudfield by a small margin. Mr Keeling, who was born in London in 1904, came to New Zealand in 1926, and before his election in 1949 he was connected with child welfare work in the Gisborne district for a number of years. During his previous term in the House he won universal respect for his ability as a debater and for his grip of the intricacies of social legislation. Mr Keeling is deputy Mayor of Gisborne, and a member of the Cook Hospital Board. He has a long association with the Labour Party in New Zealand.
