Matawhero Bridge

Good progress is now being made by the contractors, the Rope Construction Company, with the new £190,000 highway bridge across the Waipaoa River at Matawhero, at the top end of the river diversion cut.

Cylinders in river section will be built when river drops to normal summer flow. Company expects good run with work if floods don't interfere later on.

A young town has been built close to the bridge site to house the workers, most of whom have been associated with the company and are highly skilled at their jobs. Married quarters are on the left, single on the right, with camp facilities in building nearest camera. Some married couples already have good vegetable gardens.

Construction crews at work on the cylinders, or caissons. Concrete nixed to exacting specifications is poured (left) between the steel outer casing and the inner core, lenving a strong reinforced concrete cylinder when these are removed. Steel cutter rings under the cylinder then bite into subterranean earth and the cylinder is lowered by stages until it is at least 50 feet below water level. At present the crews are working an 11-hour day.
