Captain Cook first touched land in New Zealand at this spot at Kaiti Beach, and here the first man to climb to the roof of the world, the summit of Mount Everest, visits the Cook Memorials Sir Edmund Hillary inspecting one of the Endeavour's guns in front of the memorial, in company with Mr J. Berry of the "Herald".

Not as extensive as the view from Everest, but Sir Edmund found the vista from the summit of Kaiti Hill interesting enough to wish he had brought his camera along. He was most notable visitor to the lookout since Queen Elizabeth stood there last January.
