By the River

Among Gisborne's most beautiful private gardens is that of Mr and Mrs G. E. Emms in Clifford Street overlooking the Waimata River. Recently Mr and Mrs Emms threw their property open to the general public by which generous action a substantial sum was raised for the Crippled Children's Society.

More recently the garden had a distinguished visitor in Sir Edmund. Hillary, seen at right with Mr and Mrs Emms. This portion of the garden slopes steeply, to the river bank by various paved walks. One of these has been named after Sir Edmund, and during his visit he obligingly left the imprint of his size 10 shoes in the wet cement of one of the paving blocks, as a permanent reminder of his visit to these parts.
