Tennis for Beginners

Every Saturday morning, at the P.B.-East Coast Lawn Tennis Association's courts in Childers Road, over 120 young people may be found, attired in a variety of shirts and shorts, practising those long, slow strokes which are the hallmark of beginners learning tennis the right way. Right in the thick of things, if a closer look is taken, will be found Mr and Mrs E. B. Jenkin-son, giving a word of advice here, a friendly rally there, or Conducting mass classes in serving, forehand, backhand, volleying, and whatever else the well-coached young tennis player should know. Mr Jenkinson, who is president of the association, explained to "Photo News" that the classes were not designed to produce finished court performers, but to start young players on the right lines and get them to a stage of proficiency where they could hold their own in the courts of whichever club they joined.

A variety of expressions is revealed as these boys practise their service to orders from Mrs Jenkinson. Left to right, they are Barry Owen, Alan Torrie, McEwan Mclldowie, Roger Carter and Gamier (at rear), and Robert Playle.

Already there is promise of some real talent coming out of the classes. Here girls concentrate on the forehand drive as they give attention to footwork, stance, and racquet control. Girls in front row are Denise Lennane, Beverley Hardwick, Gillian Stevens, and Lesley Dunn, with Valerie Newman in the second row.
