What Cooks Here?

×

Well, it's tar that's cooking, outside a Gisborne industrial building. But what for? Tar chef at right said the answer was inside, so we vent through a small door in a large brick wall, down a dark corridor, and into a room which was all black. There we saw a man (below) cutting up what looked like breeze blocks on a circular saw. When he got one the right size he dipped it in boiling tar (right, below) and stuck it on the wall and nailed it with a meat skewer....
....All very strange, we thought. Perhaps you've guessed the what, where and why by now. Pictures were taken in the Freezing Works, where workmen are overhauling the freezing chambers. The slabs they cut and nail with skewers are of cork chips and a double layer of these is tarred on to each concrete wall, to be covered later with two coats of plaster. With all this insulation of modern design, those cold chambers will really stay cold once the job is completed.
