Mr Victor Frederick Wise, a member of the Gisborne Borough Council, died recently after a period of ill-health. Mr Wise, who was 65 years of age, was born in Islington, London, and as a young man served in all quarters of the globe on sailing ships. He took up residence in Gisborne in 1912 and in 1915 he married Miss Jean Frazer. After serving overseas in the First World War, he joined the outside staff of the Borough Council, and was respected as a capable and hard-working member. Mr Wise devoted much of his spare time to the cause of the Labour Party, of which he was a staunch and life-long supporter. He held a number of executive posts in the movement, and represented it as a delegate on several occasions. At the last elections he was elected to the Council for which he had worked for so long, and proved a valuable member. He is survived by his wife and four daughters, Mesdames D. Cameron and E. Hanes (Gisborne), A. Hooper (Carterton), and P. Carrell (Hastings). His only son, Pte. John Wise, was killed in action in World War II.
