Poultry on Display

The Army Hall reverberated with a veritable cachophony of sound one weekend early last month—it was the occasion of the Poverty Bay Poultry Association's annual show, when hundreds of poultry, pigeons, and cage birds were on show.

Judges and prizewinners, (1) Mr E. J. Poswillo, the judge, with the best bird in the show, Mr W. S. Hadwen's black-breasted Red Old English Game Cock. (2) Mr C. P.Greaves, judge, with the best fancy pigeon in the show, owned by Mr Eric Foster. (3) Mr J. J.Jackson, judge, with Mr A. L. O'Neil and his best homing pigeon in the show. (4) Mr W. Glover, judge, showing Jan and Edith Mc-Connell's Old English Game Black Red Cock, winner of the general children's classes. There was also a very fine display of cage birds in great variety.

Valerie, only daughter of Mr and Mrs C. F. Home, Ngataki, Gisborne, whose engagement is announced to Laurence, son of Mrs N. E. S. Hansen, Palmerston North. Valerie is dental nursing in Christ-church, and her fiance is a fifth-year medical student at Otago University.

Mrs Ada E. Beer, well — known community worker in Gisborne, who recently celebrated her 88th birthday, when she received a large number of well-wishers at her home, as well as numerous messages. Mrs Beer has been noted for her social work in the community over a long period of years. For over 20 years she was secretary of the Gisborne Citizens' Defence Committee, which controlled patriotic funds during World War I. In 1929 she was appointed to the Commission of the Peace, and in 1931 was elected to the Cook Hospital Board, on which she served for 16 years. In 1935 she was the recipient of the Jubilee Medal, and in 1948 she had conferred on her the honour of membership of the Order of the British Empire.

Jill, daughter of Mr and Mrs W. H. Williams, "Waimoko", Gisborne, who is engaged to Gill, son of Mr and Mrs L. R. James, Wellington. The bride-to-be, who is an Iona College old girl, has been Karitane nursing.

Children of the Gisborne Intermediate School farewell visitors from Napier who paid a visit in July. Gisborne showed general superiority in most departments of sport. Visitors were billetted in local homes, entertained at a social, and visited industries & beauty spots.

Ross Macdonald, 20-year-old son of Gisborne's station-master, Mr G. Macdonald, and Mrs Macdonald, who invaded one of the strongholds of the Scot, Dunedin, to win three high awards in piping classes at the Queen's Birthday competitions there. He finished up only one point behind the winner of the B grade championship. Boss learned to play when as a 12-year-old, he joined the Port Ahuriri Pipe Band,' Napier. At present living in Christ-church, where he is studying to be a school teacher, he still finds time to practise on the pipes for two hours a day.

Shirley Hennah, daughter of Mr and Mrs W. F. Hennah, Ormond Road, whose engagement has been announced to Raymond Roy, son of Mr and Mrs A. R. Wood, Sheehan Street.

Mr and Mrs C. Whitley, Stout Street, recently announced the engagement of their youngest daughter, Doris May, to Eric, eldest son of Mr and Mrs J. E. Hughes, of Mangapapa.
