Mercantile Basketball

A wide variety of players took the floor in the Army Hall recently for the annual indoor basketball competition among local staffs. Over two evenings of play, the contest was reduced to the tvo teams at left: Customs (standing, H. Underdown, Margaret Harris, J. Turnbull, L. Underdown, W. Rogers), and Gisborne Markets (kneeling, G. Boyarch, Binnie Kay, Thelma Crosby, Val Saggers, Terry Gardiner. Final game was won by the Customs teams

Canon A. R. H. Morris, who has succeeded Archdeacon Hall as vicar of the Gisborne parish. Canon Morris came to Gisborne from Wairoa, where he was stationed for eight years. Previous to that he was vicar at Te Karaka, and had four years overseas with the armed forces as chaplain.

Mr E. C. Fennell, coach to the Poverty Bay Golf Club, who left this week in company with Mr E. A. Southerden, the Napier professional, to compete at the International Professional Tournament for the Canada Cup at Montreal on August 20, 21 and 22. They are flying over via Honolulu, Vancouver, and Banff Springs. (Lloyd Cornish.)

Miss Gwendoline Smith, of Gisborne, who celebrated her coming of age at a most enjoyable dance in the Ritz Cabaret on June 26, when her parents, Mr and Mrs J. A. M. Smith, were hosts to many friends and relatives.

Famed view from Kaiti Hill lookout is slowly being interfered with by up-standing pine trees planted on the hill slopes, especially towards Waikanae Beach. Hill itself, a county island within the borough confines, is in a state of administrative suspension pending decisions on its fate. This shot over harbour enclosure shows Gladstone Road bridge at left and William Pettie bridge in centre.

Miss Leaone Bimler, of Gisborne, who met with a good measure of success in this year's Napier Competitions Festival, being the winner of the Ladies' Vocal Championship Gold Medal. Mrs R. F. Hutchinson, Manutuke, who captained the New Zealand women's golf team during its recent visit to Australia for the Tasman Cup matches, photographed at Darton Field airport with her husband and daughter just prior to her departure. Several members of the Poverty Bay Golf Club were also present to see her off.
