And Rained

While the photograph above was being taken in the cosy warmth of the Holden home, the wind and weather were gathering fresh fury outside Holy Trinity for the arrival of another bride and her retinue.

But Diane Barron, one of the bridesmaids (left) chose to make a run for it.

It was blowing a mere 40 m.p.h. up Derby Street, and really pouring, when Charmian June Currie arrived for her wedding to William Watson. Even the short dash from taxi to church door was out of the question without an umbrella for the bride (right).

... And Rained

By the time Miss Carrie had become Mrs Watson, the heavens had opened up with a vengeance. Nobody, not even Miss Barron, attempted to go anywhere without the shelter of an umbrella.

In the shelter of Mr Lloyd Cornish's studio, the party has time to compose itself for this formal photograph. Standing, left to right: Robyn Richmond (flower girl); Margaret Watson, the bridegroom's sister (bridesmaid); Mr R. Bellerby, Wharekopae (groomsman); the bridegroom (son of Mr and Mrs C. R. Watson, Wairarrapa); the bride (daughter of Mr and Mrs B. G. Currie, Stoko); Mr R. Watson, the bridegrooms brother (best man); and Mr R. Currie, the bride's brother (groomsman). In front: Miss Diane Barron, (bridesmaid), Ngaire Miller (flower girl), Miss Patricia Morrison (bridesmaid), and Judith Bridge (flower girl).

And Then it Rained Again

Not all Saturdays in July were wet, but Saturday the 31st made sure nobody forgot that July has a bad reputation.

Which accounts for the rain on the taxi window at right, through which can be seen (but only just) Miss Shirley Forbes and Mr Harold Andrew. They had just finished attending at the wedding of their good friends, Zillah Margaret, the younger daughter of Mr and Mrs H. Hankey, Wi Pere St., and Charles Wilton, the only son of Mr and Mrs C. Smith, Lytton Road. Out of the rain and in the ear, the happy couple are seen at right.

And of course, there was no coming out on to the steps of St. Andrews Presbyterian Church for newlyweds Norman and Barbara Ludlow, with all those light showers coming down, so they had to crowd into the doorway for this informal snap. From left: Mr Alan Cowan (Hastings); Miss Marilyn Ball (of Tokoroa, cousin of the bride); the bridegroom, son of Mr and Mrs W. Ludlow, Hastings; the bride, daughter of Mr and Mrs F. J. Rickard, Lytton Road; Mr Raymond Ludlow (brother of the bridegroom); Mrs. J. Watt (sister of the bride); Mr Ian O'Shaugnnessy (Hastings); and Miss Patricia Barker (cousin of the bride). The little flower girl at right is Christine Ludlow, niece of the bridegroom. The couple will live at Hastings.

. . . One way to avoid wet Saturdays, of course, is to get married on a wet Friday, which was the choice of Mr and Mrs Peter Andrew, of Waimata. Bride was formerly Miss Nell Burroughs, of Wanganui, and was nursing at Gisborne. Photo taken at door of Holy Trinity Church includes Mr Ray Steed (best man) and Miss Joan Dickson (bridesmaid).

But happy smiles make the best umbrellas for brides who get married on July's wet Saturdays —just the same, to the photographer a wet wedding day is a wet day, whichever way you wear your hat, so here's hoping no more brides have to curl a toe and show a knee to skip the puddles like this one leaving St. Andrews.

This happy group, ignoring the drizzle outside, were members of another July 31 wedding, that of Margaret Mary, eldest daughter of Mr and Mrs H. Merrey, Herbert Road, and Wilson Jones, third son of Mr and Mrs C. Whitley, Stout Street. At left are the best man and bridesmaid, Mr Eric Hughes (Valley Road) and Miss Doris May Whitley (sister of the bridegroom), who are pictured elsewhere in this issue in another connection. At right are the groomsman and second bridesmaid, Mr Norris Craig (Cobden Street) and Miss Rosemary Paine (Palmerston Road). The little flower girl is Denise Merrey, sister of the bride.
