Representative Football

A long run of ill-fortune for the East Coast representative football team in their annual match with the Poverty Bay rep. XV. was broken this year in the last few minutes of the game, when Coast added 10 points to win 16-14 and justify by figures a fairly clear superiority which was theirs throughout most of the game. Coast set the pace from the start, and, given an overwhelming share of the ball by their hooker, Dewes, their fast back line was seen to advantage in some very pretty movements. When they did get the ball, the P. B. backs showed plenty of talent, but they were starved most of the time, and the balance was not made better by the failure of the home pack to secure from the line-outs.

R. A. White, the P. B. captain, is seen leaping for possession from the line-out, with the ball almost passing from his grasp. Behind him is J. Paea (Tolaga Bay), wham many judged the best forward on the ground on the day, who was outstanding in the line-outs and in the loose. He has been selected as the only P. B. and Coast representative in the Maori All Black team.

Tired forwards compete for the ball in a line-out near the end of the game. Coast's third try came from a movement originating in this line-out.

J. Takarangi, the Coast full-back, about to gather in the ball. He gave a sound display and sent back many a P. B. attack with sound line kicks, but lacked pace to deal with incidents like that shown below. In the left-hand picture, J. Penny (P. B.) is seen beating Takarangi in his race for the line. At right, Penny dives across, followed by Takarangi.
