Sale Week at Richmond

In a bid to attract shoppers to Richmond during the annual winter sales week, retailers organised two contests which provided participants and spectators with a lot of laughs. The first was a hootnanny and the second was the pram derby.

Our top pic is of the Richmond Free Kindy's hoot group, comprising Nola Friend (piano), who also did the honours for the other group, June Reay, Kay Gardiner, Ellen Biggs, and Bev Hart. A distinctly Aussie flavour was provided by this group. Below, the Richmond members of the Nelson Wahine Club, comprising Vernice Pettifer, Kelly Lee, Moira Mead and Chris Gilmore ("Mammy" flavour). At bottom is a portion of the big crowd which watched the antics.

And they're off to a flying start
The pram derby attracted a big crowd and a large number of entries. The vehicles used were extremely varied and ranged from a bed to the most modern of prams. The dress of drivers and passengers alike was just as amusing.
