To Store the Wealth of the Province

×

This season it is anticipated that the Nelson fruit crop will be close to 2 million cases - wealth indeed for the province - Until now however, the depositing of this wealth has been a problem in Nelson, but from henceforth it will be banked in the most modern cool store in the Dominion. Opened by the Minister of Agriculture (Mr W. H. Gillespie) last month, the New Zealand Apple and Pear Marketing Board's new 160,000-case cool store on McGlashen Quay will probably handle more than 500,000 cases of fruit before the end of the season. The store was commenced in December, 1959, and is now operating to full capacity. Of a pleasing design, it embodies all the latest equipment in its cooling plant and is fully automatic. With the use of fork lift loaders, the pallet-loaded cases can be stored 16ft high over an area of 28,172 sq. ft. of floor space in three rooms. The total cost of the building, including a workshop and inspection depot, was about £180,000. The old cool store, No 5 as it is better known, can accommodate 26,000 cases on pallets, and will continue to function as an adjunct to the main store.
Parliamentary representatives from many districts throughout the Dominion, and representatives of newspapers from many centres, attended the official opening function. We were unable to cover the opening for this issue, but in these pages show some of the facilities in the new building and last-minute work on the interior.
