Pictures from the Past
Jim Williams provided us with these very interesting old pictures for this page.
Tahuna as it was many years ago (exact date unknown). The largish building at right foreground is now occupied by the Kozy Corner.
The caption of this photograph tells the story, or part of it, of the renowned Pelorous Jack, unpaid pilot of ships navigating the French Pass.
A little tattered but highly prized pic of Wakefield Quay showing the old baths in the left foreground. The ship leaving is the S. S. Rotoiti.
The Lady Barkley had an interesting history. From the private yacht of Governor Barkley, Australia, she became a gunboat for the New Zealand Government and operated in the Maori Wars on the Waikato River. Later she was bought by Pilot Cross, Nelson, and operated as a passenger and cargo vessel between Nelson and Golden Bay. She was later changed from a paddle steamer to screw.
