Tongan Royalty Visits Nelson

The King of Tonga, King Taufa'ahau Tupou IV, and his Queen, Queen Halaevalu Mata'aho, spent a day in the Nelson province during their New Zealand visit recently. The Royal couple arrived by R.N.Z.A.F. transport aircraft and were met at the Nelson airport by a big crowd. At the airport the King and Queen parted - the King leaving for the Golden Downs Forest to see something of our timber industry, and the Queen being taken to see pottery and homecraft exhibits in Nelson. Our pix show the Queen (left) and King (right) with the Mayoress (Mrs Horne), the Town Clerk (Mr McCullough) and the Mayor (Mr Horne). Above and Below, the Queen meeting girls of the Salisbury School, Richmond, who turned out in costume to welcome the royal couple with Maori songs.
