Preservation or Demolition

Any hopes that the Government would spend money to restore and preserve the 110-year-old Nelson Provincial Council Building were dashed by the Minister of Works (Mr Allen) during a visit to Nelson recently. Mr Allen made the trip to inspect the old building and to attend a public meeting to discuss the very thorny subject of the building's preservation. Mr Allen told the meeting of about 200 that after inspecting the building he could not recommend that Government funds should be used for restoration.
