A cocktail party was held at the Chalet Rendezvous last week to welcome to Gisborne the president and secretary of the New Zealand Retailers' Association. In the group above are, from left, Messrs. Mr Nat Pilcher, 57 Roebuck Road, is congratulated by the Mayor (Mr H. H. Barker) on the occasion of his 71st birthday last week, Mr Pilcher not only takes a pride in maintaining his street frontage in perfect order....he looks after all the frontages in his block, from Gladstone Road to Palmerston Road.

First and second prizes in the Captain Cook essay competition, sponsored by the Gisborne Business and Professional Women's Club, and competed for by pupils of the five Gisborne secondary schools, were won by Irene Smith (left), of Lytton High, and Heta Morrell, of Girl's High.
