Pictures from the Past

There has been a good deal of controversy in the newspapers recently as to whether Gisborne's harbour administrators in the past did the right thing by the city in abandoning the Reynolds plan for an overseas port. This view, probably taken in the early 1870's, shows maritime activity in the Turanganui River in the time of Captain Read, whose first store is partly hidden behind the willow tree at left. This is one of the first photographs taken showing a steamer at the Gisborne wharf. (Picture by courtesy Mr Deny W. W. Williams, Tokomaru Bay).
