A Touch Of The South Seas
In a massive project to raise funds for the Intellectually Handicapped Children's Hostel, the Gisborne Lions Club organised an "island market day" in the morning and a cabaret in the evening of a recent Saturday.
Grey Street was blocked off and palms and stalls set up to give an Island flavour. Business was brisk to say the least, and auctioneer Brian Sherriff kept the crowd going as he worked his way through a mountain of donated goods.
A most gratifying effort on the Lions' part as, after expenses, the profit for the hostel fund will be well in excess of £1,000.

Three girls who entered into the spirit of the day are Frances Gordon (Wairoa), Helen Kearney (Gisborne), and Katey Langifisi (Tonga).
Taking a very short break between carting items for the auction are, from left, (in front), Lions Fred Wale, Dick Richardson, Wally Varley, (at back), Stuart Scott and Colin Varley.
